Confidence and certainty: distinct probabilistic quantities for different goals
Thursday, 03.24.2016, 06:08am

The authors use recent probabilistic theories of neural computation to argue that confidence and certainty are not identical concepts. They propose precise mathematical definitions for both of these concepts and discuss putative neural representations.

Conceptual and technical advances define a key moment for theoretical neuroscience
Friday, 03.11.2016, 10:48pm
Theoretical approaches have long shaped neuroscience, but current needs for theory are elevated and prospects for advancement are bright. Advances in measuring and manipulating neurons demand new models and analyses to guide interpretation.
Points of View: Neural circuit diagrams
Friday, 03.11.2016, 12:59am
Use alignment and consistency to untangle complex circuit diagrams.
Neurodevelopment: Regeneration switch is a gas
Thursday, 03.03.2016, 11:31am
Nitric oxide gas has now been found to act as a switch during developmental remodelling of axonal projections from neurons: high gas levels promote the degeneration of unwanted axons and low levels support subsequent regrowth.
Focus on neural computation and theory
Friday, 02.26.2016, 11:09pm
We present a special issue focusing on recent advances in computation- and theory-driven approaches to neuroscience that inform a host of biophysical and mechanistic models.
The peptidergic control circuit for sighing
Tuesday, 02.09.2016, 11:15pm
The peptidergic neuronal circuit controlling sigh generation has been identified as ~200 Nmb- or Grp-expressing neurons in the RTN/pFRG breathing control centre of the medulla that project to ~200 receptor-expressing neurons in the respiratory rhythm generator, the preBötzinger Complex.
Natural killers in the brain's nursery
Thursday, 02.04.2016, 12:06am
A previously unknown mechanism contributes to dysfunction of the neurogenic niche during CNS autoimmunity. Natural killer cells are retained specifically in the subventricular zone in chronic disease, killing stem cells and promoting pathology.
